Searchers Preview in Seattle
I was thrilled to preview Searchers in Seattle. We learned a lot and teched the show so that we are ready to hit the ground running when we touchdown in Edinburgh. Still photography by Marcia Davis.
The Journey to SEARCHERS:
Growing up in Mukilteo, Washington, my connection to America at large was, like many of us, through literature and music. Text, sound and song lyrics shaped the very small ways that I thought about humanity, interiority, feeling, and being a part of something larger.
I spent the better part of my younger years writing music and poetry of my own, desiring to tap into the sort of divine and spiritual vein that the great wordsmiths before me had mined. It was not until much later, in my education at the University of Washington, that I found the performance arts, where I immersed myself in building a relationship to my body, voice, and craft so that I could begin to tell stories in new forms.
As I became more active in a larger community, I became more and more curious about the duality of human nature. I studied theory and psychology. I read. I listened. And I began to hear that America too, is a country made of great paradox. I became curious about the language upon which we are founded. My reading list expanded. Alternative history, folklore, American icons, erasure, presidential campaign speeches, the documents forged by the forefathers. I drove from the West Coast to the East Coast and back. I stood in awe of the mountains in Montana. I walked on the red dirt of the Badlands. I went to Wall Drug (lol). I don't know why, but the trees in Pennsylvania were surprising...
And what I came away with was, the more I learn, the less I know. I continue to come away questions:
What have we done?
Who are we?
What does it mean to be born out of and into a legacy of profound hope and devastating genocide?
Do the answers to our future lie in the pasts we've forgotten or don't want to remember?
And I put these questions into a show full of movement and poetry and spoken word and rock 'n roll baby.
I am thrilled to announce SEARCHERS will preview in Seattle June 6-10 at University Heights then will make its world premier in Edinburgh August 2019.
